What are Veneers?

A dental veneer is a thin shell of tooth-coloured porcelain that is cemented over the facial surfaces of your teeth to correct dental issues including worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, tooth discolouration, and chips or cracks.

Although veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they help makeover smiles with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth, they also have protective qualities and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Other benefits include durability, an improved smile appearance, and the need for little-to-no removal of tooth structure compared to dental crowns.

Who are Veneers for?

Design to improve the appearance of teeth, cosmetic veneers are made from porcelain or composite resin and custom-made to fit each person creating a natural and aesthetically look. Dental Veneers may solve most or even all of your cosmetic dental issues, including:

Worn Enamel: Tooth Enamel can become worn or dulled naturally over time (by consuming soft drinks, tea or coffee, from smoking and from the use of certain medications), or as a result of genetic predisposition. Veneers are perfect for correcting smiles affected by worn enamel.

Preparation of teeth

A small amount of enamel is carefully removed from the front surface of the teeth receiving veneers. This is to ensure a proper fit and placement of the veneers. The dentist will then take impressions of your prepared teeth and send them to a dental laboratory, where your veneers will be custom-crafted to match your desired specifications.

Temporary veneers and fabrication

While your permanent veneers are being created, temporary veneers may be placed to protect your prepared teeth and provide you with an aesthetic smile during the waiting period. The dental laboratory will use the impressions to fabricate your veneers, meticulously crafting them to match the shape, size, and colour discussed during the consultation.

Bonding and final placement

Once your permanent veneers are ready, you will return for the final appointment. The dentist will remove the temporary veneers and check the fit, colour, and appearance of the permanent veneers. If necessary, minor adjustments can be made. The dentist will then carefully bond the veneers to your teeth using a special dental adhesive. The veneers will be securely attached, and any excess adhesive will be removed. The dentist will evaluate your bite and make final refinements to ensure optimal comfort and aesthetics.

Aftercare for Veneers

Keep good oral hygiene

Remember to brush regularly with a soft toothbrush in a circular way to avoid the accumulation of bacterial plaque.

Have regular checkups

Regular professional cleaning can help remove surface stains and plaque buildup that can cause discolouration and damage to your veneers. Additionally, professional cleanings can help to identify any issues or damage to your veneers early on, allowing your dentist to address them promptly and prevent further harm.

Don’t clench your teeth

Try not to clench your teeth, sometimes we do it involuntarily, but doing so can cause our veneers to chip, so be careful when eating certain hard or sticky foods, to avoid any damage or break.

Tobacco yellows teeth by itself, and exactly the same thing can happen with veneers, so it’s better to avoid it. Try not to abuse some drinks with colouring, coffee, tea and drinks such as wine, juices and dark soft drinks, since these drinks will accelerate the discolouration process and they will stain your dental veneers.

Porcelain versus composite resin

Porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers are both types of veneers that are used to improve the appearance of teeth, but the main difference is the material.

Porcelain veneers:

Made from high-quality dental ceramic materials.
Typically stronger and more durable than composite veneers.
Custom-made and personalised to match the colour, shape, and size of the patient’s natural teeth
Generally more expensive than composite veneers.
Require two appointments to have placed (First appointment to prepare the teeth, take measurements and create the veneers; The second appointment to bond them to the teeth)

Composite veneers:

Made from a tooth-coloured resin material.
Typically less expensive than porcelain veneers.
Can be placed in a single appointment.
Less durable and may require more maintenance over time.
Can be repaired or touched up easily if they become damaged.
Not as customisable as porcelain veneers, but still offer the ability to improve the appearance of the teeth, they are usually use on dental bonding.
